Contributed by bellawoods, who writes:-
More from Max Geldray going back to his pre-war days in Paris and then later recordings in London and Brussels. Finally there are a couple of musical interludes from the Goon Show with the backing of the Wally Stott Orchestra.
For lovers of musical trivia you can hear a vocalist with a surname starting with 'X'.  Anny Xhoffleer. Can't be many of those around.
Not strictly British Jazz but Max must be regarded an an Honorary Brit. surely?
All tracks are MP3 with various bitrates - some VBR some constant. Quality from the different sources is variable.
Personnel details and a 'cover' picture are provided.

Note: March 18 2014 - Thanks to Boogieman, the above personnel entry (04-06) has been corrected.

  3. This coming Tuesday I'll spring this one onto the unsuspecting members of our Jazz Record Society. Variety that's what it's all about! (Jazz Record Society, 8 members on a good night) it's an age group thing.

  5. Max Geldray is a name indelibly etched on my brain from all those Goon Shows long ago. Many thanks, Bellawoods and Rodney.

  6. Max was Dutch but I certainly accept him as an honorary Brit. He was a wonderful harmonica player, and I contend that most of what he played was jazz. To my mind his musical interludes were an integral part of the Goon Show and I could never understand why they were removed from the Goon Show albums released on Parlophone and by the BBC.

Thank you, bellawoods and Rodney for sharing this compilation.

  8. Many thanks Rodney and Bellawoods, especially for the session in Brussels with singer Anny Xhoffleer. She was a big band / swing singer (Jean Omer, Fud Candrix Orchestra, Herman Sandy ...). According to Roibert Pernet, she was Dutch.
By the way, the X is nor pronounced, the name is pronounced 'Hoffleer. There are a few village names and patronyms like that in the east of Belgium - around Liege (Xhonneux and Xhoris are two that pop to my mind).
But I must disagree with the discographical info given here. According to Robert Pernet's authoritative discography of Belgian Jazz, the personel is as follows:

    The Max Geldray Quartet - Brussels, c. March-April 1946
    Max Geldray - harmonica
    Jaap Streefkerke - piano
Henri Salvador - guitar on Ain't She Sweet / There I've said it again and and Nancy
Bill Alexandre - guitar on Sleepy Down Train
    Rene Goldstein - bass
    Anny Xhoffleer - vocal

Two 78 rpm were released on the Victory label:
matrix number / title / record number
    7139 Ain't she sweet Vy9054
    7140 There I've said it again Vy9053
    7141 Nancy Vy9053
    7142 Sleepy Down Train Vy9054

There had been an earlier session (July 1945) where Max Geldray recorded with Gus Deloof & his Music (feat. Rudy Bruder, Leon Demol, Roger Desimpel ...). This session resulted in 78 rpm Vy9026 (but it is not sure whether this record was ever issued).
    7095 Truckin' Vy9026
    7096 I can't get started Vy9026

However the above issue was withdrawn from Victory's catalogue for technical recording deficiencies.

For additional info, please refer to Pernet's Discography of Belgian Jazz.

    Cheers
