I suppose this is best described as 'jazz-tinged' light music but don't let that put you off.
It presents a musical portrait of two cities - London and New York played by a big band with added strings in places but the musicians are nor identified. Johnson usually drew on the best session and jazz musicians for his recordings but we do know that Tubby Hayes was on this recording and it is he who solos on M1.
Whilst this appeared originally on the Pye label, this version is taken from a Laurie Johnson compilation cd.

This was Tubby's last commercial recording before his death and for some reason it has never seen a cd re-issue.
It was recorded in May 1969 with basically his Big Band, plus strings on some titles, and playing some of the popular music of the day in an attempt to appeal to the more commercially minded audiences. The idea of adding strings to the Big Band was that of Hayes himself though.
It probably fell between two stools at the time, appealing neither to the jazzers or the pop lovers, but Tubby plays quite beautifully and as Simon Spillett commented in his recently published Hayes biography ......'the whole is no more offensive to jazz fans' ears than some of Stan Getz's contemporary productions on the Verve label'.
Judge for yourselves.
For lovers of jazz trivia, the sleeve notes were written by journalist Sylvia Goldberg (the widow of guitarist Dave Goldberg) and with whom Tubby had a brief affair in the summer 1970 shortly after his discharge from a hospital stay of several months following a serious and life-threatening infection.

This is not the rarest session in the Tubby Hayes discography (that honour goes to singer Teri Thornton who made a single, also for CBS, with him backing) but it is next in line.
The back history is quite interesting.
It was thought at first that the single had been recorded in Los Angeles during one of the periods when Tubby was making one of his exchange visits to the USA.  But it wasn't.  The truth is much simpler.
Firstly, the title of the song on the 'A' side.
Johnny and Cleo Dankworth opened a small club in London's West End called 'The Cool Elephant' early in 1965 with the Dankworth Sextet providing the music and special guests doing a set with their own groups. Membership was ten guineas (remember those) a year and top star vocalists such as Marian Montgomery, Mel Torme, Georgia Brown, Cleo herself, Oscar Brown Jr. and Teri Thornton were booked. The club, described as an elegant music and supper club, had French chefs and Sean Kenny decor in dark blue tweed.
And June Christy was booked in during  January 1965 with her pianist Victor Feldman plus Peter McGurk and Allan Ganley from the house band and it was during this period in the UK that the record was made. Titled no doubt in honour of the Club.
The song, 'The Cool Elephant' was written by Vic Lewis and Don Black (as was the 'B' side of this single, 'Love's Not Only For The Young') and produced by Vic's own Company, Oval Productions.  He was a cricket fan.
BritJazz leaves no stone unturned to bring you this irrelevant detail.
Hayes plays flute on the title track and tenor on the 'B' side. Jimmy Deuchar plays trumpet but the other musicians are not named but I can hear piano, guitar, bass and drums.
And, as a tail piece, the Club went bankrupt in November 1965 after only a few months in business.

Almost an hour of Harry South's Big Band in a BBC Jazz Club broadcast from 8 November 1965.  Some big names here, including Tubby Hayes and a few vocals from Georgie Fame. What a pity that there were so few commercial recordings of this band although the personnel fluctuated over it's life depending upon availability of the musicians.
This was ripped from a cassette given to me by a musician friend. There is some sound disturbance for the first minute or so. Otherwise the home taping sound is reasonable for the period. Not sure what the original sound format was (my CDR shows up as CDDA) but it appears here as FLAC with a 'cover picture' and full details.

0409 Tubby Hayes [Big Band] FLAC 11(43.57)

Contributed by azule serape who obtained it from an anonymous donor. He writes:-
The recording to tape from an old AM radio was transferred from a reel-to-reel tape that had spent 40 years in Summer temperatures that regularly exceeded 40C. It had also been submerged in a flood so the sound is far from perfect although some restoration has been undertaken to remove the worst excesses.
There is some alarming tape wow and drop out in places and the original overall tape speed appears to suffer from variations too. But the leader comes through loud and clear and is in exceptional form.
Alan Dell is the announcer.
Presented as FLAC files here although the originals cannot be vouched for.

0387 Harry South Tubby Hayes [Big Bands 1964-65 and The Commonwealth Big Band 1965] FLAC 11(1.15.37)

Three BBC Jazz Club sessions. One full broadcast and two partial broadcasts.
The first, a Harry South Big Band broadcast from 16 May 1964 and what a line up too. Vocalist is Johnny Grant on three tracks and the whole session runs as one with no track separation.  Just as broadcast.
The first song 'Sound of Seventeen' fades in and there are volume level variations for the first couple of minutes. After that, the sound is fine.
The second track consists of an eleven minute track by a different South Big Band and was recorded as part of the 27th Annual Jazz Jamboree Concert held at The Hammersmith Odeon, London on 7 November 1965 in aid of The Musicians Social and Benevolent Council.  The announcer was comedian Tommy Trinder, of all people. It was broadcast on BBC Jazz Club on 26 December 1965.
The third track is by the Commonwealth Big Band under the leadership of Tubby Hayes and consists of just one 15 minute long track - '100% Proof' recorded at the same concert as track 2 but broadcast on 27 December 1965.
The music was recorded from radio to cassette tape and then digitised. It ended up as FLAC here with full track details and a 'cover' picture.

FLAC from cd with booklet details etc.
The original lp was called 'Bossa Nova Home And Away' which is very rare and the cd is now becoming equally so. Four extra tracks were added for cd issue and these are with a completely different group of musicians under the direction of Nelson Riddle.
The British group has some of the big names of the day including Tubby Hayes.

He has now given the okay for the whole session to be posted here, it having been available for long enough. So even if you have the Gearbox LP, you'll need this too.

Jazzandylan says "This session was recorded by the late Bill Hugkulstone on a reel-to-reel tape recorder. He kindly transferred it to audio cassette for me at  a later date. This cassette is the source for this post.
