Audio processed through NAD moving magnet phono adaptor and digitised with an Edirol R09-HR recorder.
Editing: Sound Forge to remove sub-audio rumble etc, manual de-clicking and re-leveling.
Adobe Audition to take noise print and remove surface noise in two passes.
Sound Forge to handle the lead in / lead out and inter-track fades plus remove the worst of the
extended 78 RPM originated clicks...
 (Analogue filters used before the days of digital editing remove the high amplitude content but leave behind a series of extended "rings" which are far more noticable to the ear)
These clicks have needed a lot of time to remove, hence I have only removed the real offensive ones
leaving quite a few smaller ones as they are, I would like you to enjoy this music, but close your eyes and imagine you are listening to some 78 RPM recordings with all their problems.

FLAC from cd with booklet details etc.
The original lp was called 'Bossa Nova Home And Away' which is very rare and the cd is now becoming equally so. Four extra tracks were added for cd issue and these are with a completely different group of musicians under the direction of Nelson Riddle.
The British group has some of the big names of the day including Tubby Hayes.

A compilation of tracks featuring the compositions and arrangements of Pete Rugolo and Ken Thorne for the Vic Lewis Orchestra recorded between 1947 and 1951.  
These were part of Vic's personal collection and originally recorded for his own label with some musicians who were to become better known in later years.
For jazz trivia enthusiasts, singer Elaine Delmar's father is in the trumpet section on track 21.

Recorded in concert at the City Hall, Sheffield in 1954 and with a very young Tubby Hayes (almost 19) in the sax section.
Lewis allows him generous solo space and his feature with just the rhythm section on 'Too Marvellous For Words' is a 'tour de force'.
The original recording could have been better but it is quite acceptable.  Does it sound slightly speeded up or is this just my imagination?  Lewis' announcements sound like he has been sniffing the helium.

This is Vic's band from late 1954. The West Coast influence is heavy here with echoes of Shorty Rogers and Stan Kenton. The Bill Holman tune 'The Opener' had  just been recorded a year earlier by Kenton so it is surprising to hear it here so soon. Some nice alto solos from, we think, Ronnie Chamberlain.
Listeners should be warned that despite the best efforts of the BritJazz technical team the recordings on side 1 are far from perfect with residual noise in places. As these recordings have only ever appeared on 78s prior to this scarce 1954 ep release it was felt that the posting was justified.

In 1959, Leonard Feather and Vic Lewis decided to record some jazz sides which reflected the then current trends both in the USA and the UK but it was not until 1987 that this album was released for the first time.  By then, some of the musicians involved had died and these sides are dedicated by Feather to their memory.
For BritJazz, only the Vic Lewis tracks (one side of the lp) are presented but you can see the details of the US group and read the track notes on the lp sleeve.

Vic Lewis was active on the jazz scene from the 1930s and led a number of fine big bands over the years. Vic was an important part of British Jazz right up to his death and his recordings always found something new and fresh to say even on music  which some would say was a pastiche of the original. Many fine players passed through the band and here in recordings from 13/14/20 January 1954 we can hear a very young Tubby Hayes on tenor but soloing on baritone on 'Bark For Barksdale'.
This tribute to Gerry Mulligan's music contains 3 tunes played from the original manuscripts donated to Vic by Gerry. The other tunes have been re-orchestrated in the Mulligan manner by Johnny Keating. Originally recorded for Decca the tracks were re-issued with other material by Vocalion in 2004.
