0204 Vic Lewis [In Concert Featuring Tubby Hayes] FLAC 15(46.59)

Contributed by bluebird, who writes:
Recorded in concert at the City Hall, Sheffield in 1954 and with a very young Tubby Hayes (almost 19) in the sax section.
Lewis allows him generous solo space and his feature with just the rhythm section on 'Too Marvellous For Words' is a 'tour de force'.
The original recording could have been better but it is quite acceptable.  Does it sound slightly speeded up or is this just my imagination?  Lewis' announcements sound like he has been sniffing the helium.

  4. Vic Lewis In Concert album pitch error

Track Peanut Vendor picked as this represents one of the more popular tracks from the period

Having compared the track Peanut Vendor with may other renditions from Red Nichols and his 5 Pennies, Louis Armstrong, Glen Miller,
    Perez Perado, Jack Payne etc,
I reckon that the Vic Lewis track is between 3 & 4 semi-tones fast.

With a pitch shift of -4 semitones the pace of the music follows closely with that of the other samples,
So my guess is the LP is fast by 4 semi-tones on it's centre tracks, this shift will vary across the disc if the speed inaccuracy is caused by the motor loading.

Failing having someone with a Tenor Sax (Bb) to try and play with the track, this is a near as I can get to an estimation of the true pitch.

  5. It says Roy Garnet on percussion. Was the vocalist on this concert not Roy Garnett (two t's)? He was my uncle and I was at the concert (age three!) and have a press cutting from the "Sheffield Star' placing him there. Any ideas?

  6. @Anonymous. Thanks for the input. We went by the sleeve notes for the spelling but your uncle's name appears regularly elsewhere with two T's so this has been corrected. On the sleeve it mentions he is the vocalist but that he plays percussion together with Vic. As he does not sing on any of the tracks (playing it again now to make sure), he is not listed as vocalist.

  7. Cheers. I bought the album to have a listen and as you say, he doesn't feature on vocals, although he did sing at the event. In the JAZZ discography (online index) it mentions that he did one recording in 1954. Any clues?

  8. @Anonymous. According to Tom Lord's Discography, there is only one recording listed for 1954 by your uncle - this one. He sang, it appears, on Ebb Tide but that wasn't issued. There are no other listings for him at all in Lord - I tried one t as well.

Do you know the exact date? Lord says Jan 23 whereas we have 29.

  9. @Anonymous. bluebird informs us that the date January 23 is correct and also that Roy Garnett did sing with the band on some listed BBC broadcasts but none of these have appeared commercially. Thanks to him for the info.

  10. Thanks to you and to bluebird. Is there any way of getting a copy of 'Ebb Tide' and the BBC broadcasts? I also remember seeing photographs of him on tour with, I believe, Cleo Lane.

  11. @Anonymous. It must be frustrating, not being able to hear your uncle sing. If you have friends in high places at the BBC you might be able to wheedle the recordings out of them but many such are long gone we fear. The best way to get access to private recordings that might exist is perhaps to post a plea on blogs such as this one - you already done that of course. It's very unlikely unfortunately but if something does turn up, at least it will ring a bell here. Sorry we can't offer more hope.

  13. how do I register for this blog I was also at this concert

  14. No registration necessary, anonymous. Just make comments under any name you like or none (as you did) and use the links above to download if you want to try the music. Or perhaps you mean follow, to get notification if something happens here? We do not offer that facility but if you you want to receive notification of comments posted on any item, you can subscribe to it but to do this you must comment using an ID with an associated email address (not visible). As far as we know, there is no facility to receive notification of new posts but these are intended to be made always on each Sunday, for the time being anyway.

  15. thanks for your reply I am using Firefox and would like to download this music I have third party cookies enabled but when I click on the links I am directed back to your site instead of Rapidshare am I missing something?

  16. Could this be because the links are not displayed as clickable links in themselves but only as the text of the links. You have to copy and paste the links into the address bar of your browser (Firefox). Clicking on them as displayed in comments should take you nowhere.

If this doesn't help, do come back here. Sure we can sort it out. It could be something in your individual settings though - a high level of security protection perhaps, something like that. How do you get on at other sites with download links?
