This is not the rarest session in the Tubby Hayes discography (that honour goes to singer Teri Thornton who made a single, also for CBS, with him backing) but it is next in line.
The back history is quite interesting.
It was thought at first that the single had been recorded in Los Angeles during one of the periods when Tubby was making one of his exchange visits to the USA.  But it wasn't.  The truth is much simpler.
Firstly, the title of the song on the 'A' side.
Johnny and Cleo Dankworth opened a small club in London's West End called 'The Cool Elephant' early in 1965 with the Dankworth Sextet providing the music and special guests doing a set with their own groups. Membership was ten guineas (remember those) a year and top star vocalists such as Marian Montgomery, Mel Torme, Georgia Brown, Cleo herself, Oscar Brown Jr. and Teri Thornton were booked. The club, described as an elegant music and supper club, had French chefs and Sean Kenny decor in dark blue tweed.
And June Christy was booked in during  January 1965 with her pianist Victor Feldman plus Peter McGurk and Allan Ganley from the house band and it was during this period in the UK that the record was made. Titled no doubt in honour of the Club.
The song, 'The Cool Elephant' was written by Vic Lewis and Don Black (as was the 'B' side of this single, 'Love's Not Only For The Young') and produced by Vic's own Company, Oval Productions.  He was a cricket fan.
BritJazz leaves no stone unturned to bring you this irrelevant detail.
Hayes plays flute on the title track and tenor on the 'B' side. Jimmy Deuchar plays trumpet but the other musicians are not named but I can hear piano, guitar, bass and drums.
And, as a tail piece, the Club went bankrupt in November 1965 after only a few months in business.
WAV from 45 single with a 'cover picture', track details such as they are and a couple of photographs taken at the Club.

The two albums (this one and Down in the Village - posted separately) were originally recorded for Fontana at Ronnie Scott's Club over the two nights of 17 and 18 May 1962. The Quintet is in cracking form and the atmosphere is well captured in the live recordings although the audience seems surprisingly underwhelmed. That was the story of British Jazz in the 1960s.
These particular recordings were taken from the OOP cd re-issues on Redial.
The almost forgotten man of jazz, pianist Gordon Beck, had a short stay with Tubby during 1962/1963 before regular pianist Terry Shannon re-joined and whilst he plays competently enough here he doesn't really seem to 'gel' with this particular group. But just listen to the drumming master class delivered by Allan Ganley. He could swing the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra when he is on form like this.

A pair of eps issued originally on Tempo and dating from a session held on 29 March 1957. There is an opportunity to hear the great Derek Humble at some length but the other saxophonist present is no slouch either.
One other title from this session,  'How Long Has This Been Going On', appeared on a Tempo compilation lp which has been published earlier on this blog.
The music is a mixture of old and new standards.

Two sessions from March 1958 with two different Deuchar led groups. Deuchar, Humble and Wray were working with the Kurt Edelhagen Big Band in Germany at the time and were on a flying visit home when these sessions were made.
The March 4 date gives the opportunity to hear Derek Humble at some length - what a shame that he never got to record an album under his own name and that he had to spend most of his later career playing outside the UK. He was seriously injured when mugged in Cologne in 1968 and whilst he played with the Clarke-Boland Band for the following two years his health was badly affected. He returned to the UK in the summer of 1970 and died whilst visiting his mother in February 1971. He was 41 years old at the time. 
The 7 March date has tunes from the musical 'Pal Joey' from which the album title is based and has Tubby Hayes playing some baritone sax.

This is one of 3 Tempo samplers from January 1958. At the time of issue, these were un-issued  tracks combined with a selection of other tracks from the then current Tempo catalogue. Now, of course, all have been re-issued on cd by Jasmine.
A fabulously rare and expensive lp and not often seen these days this is the original lp and sound.
Of interest to trivia collectors is that the lovely Jackie Collins, then age 20, features on the cover as indeed she does on the other two samplers.
When Jasmine issued their own cd sampler, 'Keeping Tempo', in 2001 they used the same cover picture which was a nice little acknowledgement to the classic Tempo label.

Biography by Ron Wynn
One of Britian's better bebop trumpeters, Jimmy Deuchar played in London's Club Eleven while in the Royal Air Force, then joined the Johnny Dankworth Seven in 1950. He later played with Geraldo and Oscar Rabin and Ronnie Scott's sextet in Paris in 1951. There were recording sessions with Jack Parnell and Scott in the early '50s, followed by stints and/or tours with Tony Crombie, Lionel Hampton and Scott. Deuchar moved to Germany in the late '50s, and played from 1957 to 1959 with Kurt Edelhagen's band. He returned to Scott's group for a couple of years, then played in Tubby Hayes' quartet, The Clarke-Boland Big Band and Edelhagen's band. Deuchar worked mainly as an arranger during the '60s and '70s, making one album as a leader in 1979.
Jimmy Deuchar. This able but scarcely exceptional Scottish trumpeter leads a small group through a blowing session, Pub Crawling with Jimmy Deuchar, Contemporary 3529, which is interesting mainly for the amiably burr-toned trombone of Ken Wray.
