August 30 2014: Please note, this item was available on the Ronnie Ross Music blog as Messages From Munich. This post has a different title and covers.

Don Menza - alto, tenor
Ronnie Ross - baritone
Bill Le Sage - piano, harpsichord
George Mraz - bass

06 Heathrow Blues (4:15)

Recorded: November 15 16 1967 Munich Germany
Lineage: Uncertain - passes Audiochecker as CDDA 99.83%
I believe this material was issued on the Hot House label as "Messages From Munich", maybe about 1996/7. I contacted the owner after it was no longer available and I think the label was defunct but was unable to obtain a copy. Most of the material was issued on other albums (on the Inmus label) but not as far as I know the tracks here.

Label: Harlequin HQ3011
Recorded: December 1942-June 1943
Lineage: 78s>FLAC
Processing: Playback Ariston Transcription table, SME Arm with Shure V15 cartridge
Audio processed through NAD moving magnet phono adaptor and digitised with an Edirol R09-HR recorder.
Editing: Sound Forge to remove sub-audio rumble etc, manual de-clicking and re-leveling.
Adobe Audition to take noise print and remove surface noise in two passes.
Sound Forge to handle the lead in / lead out and inter-track fades plus remove the worst of the
extended 78 RPM originated clicks...
(Analogue filters used before the days of digital editing remove the high amplitude content but leave behind a series of extended "rings" which are far more noticable to the ear)
These clicks have needed a lot of time to remove, hence I have only removed the real offensive ones
leaving quite a few smaller ones as they are, I would like you to enjoy this music, but close your eyes and imagine you are listening to some 78 RPM recordings with all their problems.

0419 Don Rendell [Doggin' Around All the Winners] FLAC 4(16.39)

Contributed by Rodney, who writes:-
All the issued material from a 1957 session, the last track as part of an LP only.
Tuneful and boisterous music which reminds me somewhat of the west coast sound, the same kind of impetus.
Quite good sound quality even if I can't remember where it all came from now.
I could not quite make out exactly where Eddie Harvey plays the piano and valve trombone but it seems he was dodging from one to the other with some rapidity at times.
Fortunately, Ronnie Ross spends most of his time on baritone and while his alto outing is energetic and assertive, it was the larger instrument on which he excelled.

Bert Courtley - trumpet
Eddie Harvey - valve trombone, piano
Ronnie Ross - alto (02), baritone
Don Rendell - tenor
Kenny Napper - bass
Phil Seamen - drums

0418 Harry South [North Of The Soho Border] FLAC 23(55.58)

Contributed by delmonico, who writes:-
Almost an hour of Harry South's Big Band in a BBC Jazz Club broadcast from 8 November 1965.  Some big names here, including Tubby Hayes and a few vocals from Georgie Fame. What a pity that there were so few commercial recordings of this band although the personnel fluctuated over it's life depending upon availability of the musicians.
This was ripped from a cassette given to me by a musician friend. There is some sound disturbance for the first minute or so. Otherwise the home taping sound is reasonable for the period. Not sure what the original sound format was (my CDR shows up as CDDA) but it appears here as FLAC with a 'cover picture' and full details.

0415 William Russo [Stonehenge And Five Pieces For Jazz Orchestra] FLAC 9(35.22)

Contributed by bluebird, who writes:-
Who was it who said ' a game of two halves' in the football context?
Well, this is a record of two halves in the musical context.  The first side being devoted to the four part 'Stonehenge' which could well have been written for, and played by, Stan Kenton.  It is full of fire, shouting brass, brooding ensembles and not a little pretension. The scores must have been difficult to play but the musicians are well up to the job particularly in the lip busting, high note trumpet section work.
The second side is more in the jazz style with some attractive themes well played and with some interesting solos.  The musicians are drawn from the ranks of top British session players with some big names from the jazz world added.
Russo was, of course, one of the more interesting writers/arrangers for Kenton whose various bands in the 1950s/1960s enjoyed playing Bill's challenging music.  Russo outgrew the jazz world and moved on to teaching and writing in the academic world, becoming William in the process. His short stay in London after he left Kenton produced some fine music of which this is one example.

Contributed by bellawoods, who writes:-
Betty Smith sings (all tracks except 03) and plays tenor sax (all tracks except 02, 05 and 07) with the Tony Lee Trio in 1978.
Tony plays mainly electric piano here (all tracks except 01 and 09) which is not to everyone's taste but he is one of the better players on this instrument and it is a fine swinging little group enhanced by Betty's vocals.
