Betty Smith sings (all tracks except 03) and plays tenor sax (all tracks except 02, 05 and 07) with the Tony Lee Trio in 1978.
Tony plays mainly electric piano here (all tracks except 01 and 09) which is not to everyone's taste but he is one of the better players on this instrument and it is a fine swinging little group enhanced by Betty's vocals.
Tony Lee - piano, electric piano
Tony Archer - bass
Jack Parnell - drums
Betty Smith - vocal

Thanks Rodney and bellawoods! Cheers!
ReplyDeleteMany thanks to Bellawoods and Rodney for this one. I saw Betty Smith several times in the early 1960s at jazz clubs in Portsmouth. She usually appeared with Kenny Baker and I don't recall her singing during these visits. It's a pity that vocals dominate this LP and the earlier EP posted on BritJazz. Nothing wrong with her singing, but I would have preferred to hear more of her fine tenor playing. One can only speculate as to whether this was her decision or pressure from the record companies. As she is sadly no longer with us I guess we will never know. We must be grateful that Kathy Stobart didn't sing!
ReplyDeleteBut Kathy did sing - I have a recording of her with Vic Lewis and singing with a strong Geordie accent!
DeleteThanks for the information Bluebird - I stand corrected. Don't think I'll be looking for it though.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Rodney and bellawoods for sharing this album.
