0597 Various Artists [We Love You Madly] FLAC 11(38.15)

Contributed by bluebird, who writes:-
This is just the music (no video) from a BBC TV transmission to celebrate the 70th Birthday of Duke Ellington in April 1969 and played by various groups.
The sound taken from a CDR is not brilliant and there is some residual background noise, possibly the result of earlier over-enthusiastic restoration work, but it is perfectly listenable and there are some fine solos.
Stan Tracey's Big Brass, one of the groups here, plays five selections all of which appeared on his 1968 album 'We Love You Madly' with the same featured soloists.
Sound (the format of which could be anything) from TV transmission via CDR with a 'cover' picture and track/personnel details.

Two of the titles on this compilation  can be classed as novelty items - amusing the first time heard but perhaps not for repeated playing.
The two standards feature Dankworth almost exclusively in his 'couth, 'kempt and 'shevelled mode.

Contributed by azule serape, who writes:-
Some fine sounds here from the Dankworth band of 1959-1961 which was a very productive period for him.
'African Waltz' (you must remember that one) was a big commercial success and the Bands contained many stars - Danny Moss, Dave Lee, Kenny Wheeler, Peter King, Art Ellefson, Ronnie Ross to mention just a few.
These Roulette recordings have been re-issued many times in various formats and combinations but this compilation features the very best of the period from this excellent Big Band.

0270 John Dankworth [Dankworth Plays Dankworth] FLAC 10(42.21)

Contributed by bluebird, who writes:-
One of Dankworth's great bands from around the  Newport Jazz Festival period playing the compositions of the leader. Personnel and dates are 'best guesses' based on the musicians heard in solo.
John Dankworth described his own playing as 'Couth, Kempt and Shevelled' which I think is a lovely description - very modest but very true.

0233 John Dankworth [Get Happy] FLAC 16(51.30)

Contributed by bluebird, who writes:-
I am always wary of lps which state, as this one does, 'Living Presence Sound' and 'Stereo Enhanced'.
In other words, it means that the sound is not very good even allowing for the fact that the music was taken from 78 rpm discs and is around 60 years old. So, be warned.
With that warning, what about the music?
The sides are by the Dankworth Seven recorded between 1950 and 1952, Cleo Laine sings on some tracks. Strings are added on others. There are band vocals in places. The choice of material is questionable. 'The Wedding of the Painted Doll' and 'The Belle Of The Ball' for goodness sake.
I wonder what was going through Dankworth's mind when he decided to record some of these tracks?  In places it sounds like a second rate, end of the pier ageing dance band and there are perhaps 5 tracks from the 16 here which are worth listening to.
Why bother posting this?  Well, BritJazz likes to post the bad with the good so that you can decide for yourself. Am I being too harsh here?

Some Dankworth big band tracks from 1955/56 are heard here. There were not too many well known names in the band at this time, the best known perhaps, being drummer Kenny Clare.
Later bands in the early/mid 1960s attracted many big jazz names.

0199 Johnny Dankworth [London To Newport] FLAC 8(47.57)

Contributed by delmonico, who writes:-
This was the Band's first visit to the USA and the invitation to play at the prestigious 1959 Newport Jazz Festival was a great honour for the Band and for UK jazz.
Originally recorded live at Newport by Top Rank, it had lp issues in both the USA and the UK (albeit under different album titles) and was well received in both countries.
This was a great Dankworth Band - one of the best - but there is, understandably, a sign of nervousness in places.  Dankworth admitted that some of the solos 'didn't come right up to form'.  But overall the appearance was a great success and was followed by further US dates (including one at Birdland) and a promise of a return Birdland booking at a later date.

Contributed by bluebird, who writes:-
Another fine compilation of the MM Poll Winners for 1954-55 as chosen by the readers and, in contrast, 4 tracks by musicians chosen by the critics/music columnists in 1952 and originally released on 2 x 78 rpm records.  Again, there are alternate takes in some cases.
All were recorded by Esquire, the champion for British jazz in this period, and this compilation is from the re-issue lp.
Quality is variable as is the case with many of these Esquire Treasure Chest re-issue lps.

0087 Melody Maker All Stars [Waxing the Winners 1951-52-53] FLAC 12(53.47)

Contributed by bluebird, who writes:-
In keeping with other music magazines of the time, Melody Maker also ran readers polls to determine their favourite jazz musicians and then recorded them.
They were usually blowing sessions with everyone getting his 16 or more bars and the outcomes were often not particularly memorable (but remember the famous Metronome session with Miles Davis, Fats Navarro and Dizzy Gillespie comprising the trumpet section?).
Here then are the cream of the British musicians (according to MM readers) in sessions from 1951, 1952 and 1953. There are some alternate takes.
The 1951 session was originally issued on one Esquire 78 rpm record and the other sessions on two 10" Esquire lps (20-001 and 20-008), one of which was Esquire's very first jazz lp venture. These recordings are from the Esquire re-issue lp which put together the results of these sessions.
Ripped in FLAC from CDR with original cover picture from the mid 1980s Esquire re-issue lp together with track and personnel details. The sound source is variable in quality.
