Some fine sounds here from the Dankworth band of 1959-1961 which was a very productive period for him.
'African Waltz' (you must remember that one) was a big commercial success and the Bands contained many stars - Danny Moss, Dave Lee, Kenny Wheeler, Peter King, Art Ellefson, Ronnie Ross to mention just a few.
These Roulette recordings have been re-issued many times in various formats and combinations but this compilation features the very best of the period from this excellent Big Band.

ReplyDeleteMany thanks to Azule Serape for this one which contains "String Of Camels" and "Chano", not available on any other issue in the UK as far as I know. With "Jazz Routes" posted recently we now have all the Roulette tracks except "Daily Date" which was only issued in the USA on the Johnny Dankworth album "Jazz From Abroad" and reissued on vinyl there as part of a double album "Echoes Of An Era". The other record in the set was "Billy Strayhorn Live!".
ReplyDeleteGood stuff. I had far too much exposure to 'African Waltz' as a child, so I think I'll be skipping over that for most plays (except for those deep dark moments of wallowing in sentiment), but the rest is excellent. To tell the truth I disliked the Dankworth bands for much of my adult life on the basis of that annoying tune, but I have been repeatedly proved wrong by these excellent BritJazz posts.
ReplyDeleteThanks azule!
