Something a little different in that a violinist, Don Harper,  takes centre stage in this fine small group recording featuring a duo, trio, quartet and sextet from the collective musicians.
If the song 'Little Buttercup' sounds familiar, well it is, but now better known as 'I'll Never be The Same' following lyrics which were added by Gus Kahn to the original instrumental.

Note: Tom Lord's discography lists Tony Coe as playing all three instruments but I could not hear an alto saxophone anywhere except maybe near the middle of 05. Even then it still sounded more like a soprano saxophone to me.

This was Tony's working Quintet in 1962 and it was his first full lp as leader (he had made some earlier sides issued on ep).
Whilst there may many admirers of Tony's work out there, he has a personal sound that really doesn't appeal to me (Paul Gonsalves too) but one has to admire the musicianship and the swinging sounds on this fine mainstream lp. The much under-rated pianist, Colin Purbrook, gets some solo space too.
It has been re-issued on a Japanese cd (very elusive) but this is from the original vinyl.

Simon Spillett mentioned this album on August 24 last year (see Vic Ash [Session for Four] - 0084); `Why not try and dig out his rare tracks Blue 'n Boogie and High Priest from the Nixa "Blackstick" album. Even Vic hasn't got them!`
So here is the album - Pye issue. A good balance of styles and variety to portray comprehensively one of the archetypal instruments of jazz. Strong playing from all participants and some very big names in there. All the clarinettists acquit themselves well, including Vic of course. I particularly noticed the tunes by the Tony Coe group but that may have been due to a style preference rather than the performances. I can't say I'd ever heard of Maurice Biella before and when I Googled the name just now I got five hits, all about bikes! Nothing in Tom Lord's "The Jazz Discography" either.
