0032 Jack Parnell Orchestra [The Singles 1952-1954] FLAC 18(48.41)
Contributed by delmonico, who writes:-
The Parnell Orchestra of the early 1950s really was a breeding ground for the British modernists and unlike the Ted Heath Orchestra, which was rehearsed and regimented with no improvisation, it gave the soloists room to expand and played interesting charts. The band has not been given its due for the contribution to the development British jazz.
In these selections from the 1952-1954 period musicians such as Jimmy Deuchar, Ken Wray, Derek Humble, Ronnie Scott and many others went on to provide the backbone of British modern jazz in later years. A young Tubby Hayes joined the band in March 1954 replacing Joe Temperley but was fired in September after his arrest in Blackpool for possession of cannabis. You can hear him here soloing on 'Sure Thing' and 'Trip To Mars'.
Full discographical details included.

0031 Dizzy Reece [A New Star] FLAC 6(28.06)
Contributed by grumpy
This is what musicians call a "blowing session". No attempt to create any so-called "new sounds". Just honest-to-goodness, down-to-earth, relaxed swinging jazz. This date gives a real first recording break to one of the British jazz scene's "musicians' musicians", trumpeter Dizzy Reece.Dizzy's following is confined to just about every musician who has blown with him, a handful of knowledgeable fans (the kind who dig Miles Davis) and a couple of critics. This particular writer has tried to wake the town and tell the people about Dizzy since early 1954, but so far all appears to have fallen on deaf ears.

0030 Lita Roza [Listening In The After Hours] FLAC 8(26.47)
Contributed by delmonico, who writes:-
A 1955 recording with the Quartet which includes Joe Harriott. Lita sticks to the well known standards - she was never too adventurous in her few jazz outings after she left the Ted Heath band. Was she a jazz singer? Perhaps.
Joe Harriott plays quite beautifully in his backing and solo spots and gives no indication of things to come in his later ground - breaking free form work.

0029 Frank Horrox [Jazz Session] FLAC 4(11.46)
Contributed by delmonico, who writes:-
Frank Horrox was the Ted Heath pianist throughout the 1950s and recorded only one other session under his own name. Here he is joined by Don Rendell on tenor and Albert Hall on trumpet playing four standards. It is thought that the recording dates from around 1959.
After leaving Heath, Horrox freelanced as pianist and arranger and he died in Germany in 1972.

0028 Tubby Hayes [The Yellow Rose Session 1956] FLAC 5(12.41)
Contributed by bluebird, who writes:-
This is a 30 minute broadcast from the BBC Light programme Dance Music slot where Hayes and his Octet, making their debut here, show that even top class musicians had to make musical concessions and play 'near jazz' material to earn a living back in 1956. Note the very proper BBC announcer trying to be cool.

0025 Tubby Hayes [Tubby's Groove] FLAC 6(40.34)
Contributed by bluebird.
I think it's one of Tubby's best ever studio recordings and catches him very much in his prime. I suppose that the stand-out track for me has to be Sunny Monday with its unaccompanied tenor choruses. The tone is big, the rhythmic delivery is full of confidence and the sheer enthusiasm shines through half a century on. Simon Spillett

0024 Tommy Whittle [More Waxing with Whittle] FLAC 13(1.00.00)
Contributed by delmonico, who writes:-
Here are further recordings of Whittle's Quintet from 1954/55. Pianist Dill Jones and baritone saxophonist Harry Klein are present on all tracks and it is good to hear Klein stretch out in a smaller group. At the time Klein and Ronnie Ross (both very different in approach and sound) were the main UK exponents of the baritone. Klein, the older man, started his recording career in 1949 whilst Ross came along 5 years later and challenged him successfully for the top spot in later years.
Klein had a long and varied career working latterly as a freelance session musician, on cruise ships and as a tv actor. He was still active in the 2000s playing mainly alto sax.
Tommy Whittle, of course, continues to play and is one of our finest living (and perhaps under appreciated) musicians.
Ripped in FLAC from re-issue lp with cover scans. The tracks originally appeared on a 10" lp Esq 20-048, 'The Tommy Whittle Quintet', ep 67 on Esquire and 3 x 78 rpm singles.
This is the ep sleeve. No lp available.
