0315 Ted Heath [Spotlight On Side Men] FLAC 12(37.24)

Just what it says on the sleeve. All nicely played with some good arrangements and solos but it stills smacks of Saturday Night at the Palais. Foxtrot anyone?

  1. many thanks. Victor Silvester this ain't. Heath always used best talent available. Profound quality of musicianship here and good jazz, as evident in the solos. The band swings at all tempos. This was not a jazz band for it could not have survived as a jazz band. It played the palais in the golden days when there were palais. Jazz began, and for its first three decades existed, as dance music. When jazz left the dance halls it lost its prime social function and most of its audience. Great Fox notes.

  3. Many thanks. The question as to whether it is jazz does not need come into it, (although it always did with every Heath record issued) it is wonderful big band music and that is good enough for me. This album demonstrates the wonderful musicianship within the band both as a cohesive unit and the individual solo abilities of the chosen sidemen. Everyone will have a favorite track from this album, my choice would be Love For Sale with the wonderful Frank Horrox in full flight.

  6. Thank both of you very much. Personally, I think Heath is underrated on this side of the Atlantic.
