Thanks for the post, jazzandylan and Rodney!
ReplyDeleteDidn't he write stuff for the BBC Symphony Orchestra back in the 50s i seem to remember his name but must admit I'm not familiar with his own recordings. Thanks jazzandylan worth a listen as i do like the clarinet.
ReplyDeleteI think that's right - I seem to remember his name being connected with (Bert) Ambrose as an arranger. I suspect there is a Volume 2 EP somewhere around, which would be interesting if anyone out there has access. But this is a good post, one which is very enjoyable. Many thanks for all the hard work.
Deletemany thanks. hard to imagine what audience this would have had in 1960 when the trad boom was underway. Phillips was a fine clarinettist who sat beside the great Danny Polo in the pre-war Ambrose reed section.
ReplyDeleteThanks very much for this EP. I do have rips of a couple of his albums.
ReplyDeleteBring them to the party jazzuk.I'd like some more:)

ReplyDeleteMany thanks, jazzandylan and Rodney.
ReplyDeleteI have Sid's original recording of Who's Sorry Now. It never ceases to grab me. It's one of the most complete pieces of swing jazz recording by clarinet ever! Thanks for these tracks.
ReplyDeleteKeith - Might it make it's way onto BritJazz then?
