0016 Various Artists [Black British Swing] FLAC 24(1.09.48)
Contributed by delmonico, who comments:-
Something different here. The black or 'coloured' bands of the 30s and 40s in the UK and whilst the names may not be too familiar there are some who went to make further contributions to British jazz and popular music in later years.
These are recordings from the British National Sound Archive and listeners are urged to buy the cd which has a superb 40 page booklet detailing the history of the bands and the period in which they thrived.
Ripped in FLAC from cd with some booklet scans.

ReplyDeleteThank you Delmonico...the only one I know is George Roberts, that's all, thanks again !!
Thank you for posting this. My grandfather, Freddy Grant, features on this on tracks 18 to 20 with his clarinet-I'm always on the look out for him!
ReplyDeleteCan you re-upload please?
ReplyDeleteThank you for the speedy new links. I will mention/request if there's other posts that need a re-up, as I journey upwards through this musical treasure of a blog.
ReplyDeleteLucky day for me. First I find that Spike Robinson has been re-upped and then clicking on the Spike Hughes label brought me here, where I found a fresh link.
ReplyDeleteMy thanks to delmonico and everyone else involved in making this music available.
All the links have now been renewed so if anyone finds a dud, please let us know.
ReplyDeleteMy father played sax and clarinet, and was known as Sid Owen, but I didnt know he was black!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - perhaps they stretched the point, like Red Rodney with Charlie Parker, making out he was black but an albino.
ReplyDeleteIn fact dad played as sax man to Louis Armstrong when he came to the UK, when things got hot for Louis in the US.I think it was about 1930. We have photos of him in our album. I think he later played for Spike Hughes. In 1939 he was involved with "The Night Watchmen". Don't know any more - he died before I had a chance to find out. Just some pictures.
