A small band led by Tony Crombie who composed both tunes heard here. The first of three eps in this Flamingo series  and this one featuring the two tenors of Don Rendell and Tommy Whittle.
Benny Green, who later enjoyed a successful career as jazz writer, reviewer and broadcaster is heard on baritone sax. He played with various Ronnie Scott groups between 1952 and 1956 but took few solos.
One further title recorded at this session by this group, and also composed by Tony Crombie, has previously appeared on this blog as part of the 'Jazz At The Flamingo' lp.

0171 Wally Fawkes [Flook Digs Jazz] FLAC 4(13.30)

Canadian born clarinettist Wally Fawkes, who is as well know for his long running cartoons of Flook in the Daily Mail and other publications as his music, is heard here in a session with his 'Troglodytes' from 1959. His pen name is Trog which explains the name of his group. An example of his work is shown on this ep cover.
Wally was a long time member of the Humphrey Lyttelton group and his brilliant satirical political cartoons were appreciated by many of those he portrayed. He never suffered fools gladly as this quote from him displays:
"I've always had a problem of trying to demolish the superior. I remember when Lady Rothermere [wife of the Mail's owner] was introduced to me, the person who drew Flook, and she said: 'Oh how marvellous! How is your furry little curly thing?' Without thinking, I said: 'Fine thanks. How's yours?' I've never been able to stop doing things like that"
Born in 1924, he is still alive, as far as is known, but no longer playing or drawing professionally.

Various Ronnie Scott groups from the 1951/52 period including an interesting session with Kenny Graham and his Afro-Cubist rhythm section.
The long track, 'All The Things You Are', was cut direct to disc at the end of a normal Esquire session and was one of the earliest so recorded. Coupled with another long track similarly recorded (not here but will be presented  in the future) they formed the whole of one 10" lp when originally issued.
Sound, as usual from these Esquire re-issue lp recordings, is not the best but perhaps adds a certain period charm.

Crombie took his band to Israel in late October 1955 for a series of concerts in that country and these tracks are taken from a Tel Aviv concert broadcast by Israeli State Radio.
Vocalists Annie Ross and Johnny Grant are featured on 4 of the 6 tracks.
Sound quality is not of the best but listenable.

0168 Eddie Thompson [Piano Moods] FLAC 10(41.20)

I came across this record in a charity shop in Birmingham in 1991. I hadn't heard of Eddie Thompson at that time, but, as ever, was on the lookout for unusual/obscure gems, and this LP seemed to fit the bill very well. I fell in love with it immediately, and it has become one of my most-played jazz albums. It was only a couple of years ago, when I started to have a proper look on the web at what else of ET's was available, that I discovered that I was in possession of quite a rarity, and that most people have never heard it. I think that is a great shame.
Four of the (many) things I love about this album: the tightly-focussed, urgent fluency of Thompson's fingering on such numbers as Eddification, Watch for the Light, and Eddie Blows the Blues; the expressive, genuinely tender passages featured in Three for 3-4 & Theme for Nica; the rhapsodic, darker tones of Contemplation, which I can't help feeling is a not-so-distant jazz relation of the Ballades of Chopin; and, lastly, the clanking of beer bottles at 0:41 on Three Cuban Heels — it just hits the spot every time!

A little known alto player with a beautiful tone on his first and only recording as leader in 1957. Don played with the Frank Weir Orchestra, Tito Burns, Ted Heath and Ambrose and, like many other musicians at that time, was mainly buried away in the section of commercial dance bands to earn a living.
He leads a fine group here and it would be good to hear some more from this musician. Does anyone recall him and are there solos, say, with Ted Heath during the few months he spent in that band?
