From 'The BritJazz Team'
BritJazz has now closed but it would be fitting to give a sincere and heartfelt 'send-off' to our leader, Rodney Pledge, and say thank you for all the hard work he has put in over the years to make this blog the success that it has been.
And who better to do the musical honours than Rodney's hero, Ronnie Ross.
The BritJazz contributors have scoured the five corners of the earth (yes, we found another one), listened to hours of radio tapes, delved into the dusty archives in the cellars and searched through those boxes of James Last lps in Charity Shops throughout the land and come up with this musical Rossfest.
This is the 'seldom heard' Ronnie Ross, the session man supreme playing in some surprising company at times. Some Rodney will know of, some he might even have heard before but we hope that there is just something that comes as a surprise. He is present on all tracks but it might only be just a chorus amongst the dross and maybe right at the end of the song but he is there and he does solo, I guarantee.
So thank you Rodney for your immense contribution to BritJazz from all of us here, good luck and Lang May Yer Lum Reek.
FLAC from lps and cds with a 'cover picture' and some basic track detail.
From Rodney:-
After a momentary flash of puzzlement (not a post I had passed for publication!), I cottoned on and felt only immense gratitude for the kind gesture and words above. So I've been the "leader" for the past six years, have I? There was me thinking I was at best a helmsman but more likely a deckhand. The folks to really take credit are those in the engine room, who supplied all the music and artwork (occasionally including me, I admit).
It has been a great source of enjoyment for me, I must say, to travel on the BritJazz voyage. Sad I feel that it has to come to the final mooring but maybe for the best on the "quit while you're ahead" principle? They'll be plenty of new ideas for jazz blogs coming along I'm sure - as well as those currently running, some of which I hope to remain moderately active on.
Some of the Ronnie Ross material here I am familiar with of course but most of it I rarely hear, and some not at all, ever. I do remember the announcement about him playing the tenor with John Miller whereas it's clearly an alto - but I shouldn't be quibbling. Many really nice bits to surprise so a fine compilation which I will treasure and intend to listen to many more times. Thank you, fellows, for the admirable hard work.
"Lum reek" sounds as if it might be quite rude but I won't try to find out what it really means in case it's even worse than I suspect.
All the best to everybody here, on both BritJazz blogs, and thank you all for the magnificent support, of all kinds.

ReplyDelete""Lum reek" sounds as if it might be quite rude"
ReplyDeleteSorry to disappoint an (alleged, of course) fan of hot pants but "lum reek" is part of a Scots phrase meaning "Long may your chimney smoke". Sadly, it carries ne'er a hint of innuendo, expressing only the hope that the addressee should enjoy a comfortable and prosperous future. Wishing such for the world renowned founder of BritJazz is surely uncontroversial.
Ah ha! So it's almost English then. Reek = Smell (of smoke)? In Lum I can't see any clue to chimney. Nice to have the fog cleared away though.
DeleteI am genuinely sorry to find that BritJazz is definately closing; I have found many many excellent recordings here over the years, and some - perhaps a lot - were by musicians I hadn't known much or anything about before. Whatever Mission Statement you may have had I can confirm you probably exceeded it in my case anyway!
ReplyDeleteAnd I will miss the comments too, which often gave fascinating background information or pointed towards other recordings or musicians which I followed up with usually delightful results. Great stuff from all, really, especially the Great Helmsman Rodney.
I'm old and tired enough - though not as old as most jazz fans, I often think - to know that nothing lasts for ever, so I'll regret the passing of BritJazz but also hope for something wonderful to come over the horizon, sooner than later. I'll wish us all a Happy 2016.
Amen to that Greg.
ReplyDeleteSad to see you go, but thank you for taking me on the journey.
ReplyDeleteWhen Rodney allowed me access to Britjazz a couple of years ago it was a great surprise to find that he lived about a mile from me. I am not much use with anything technical so he has been happy to prepare my music for posting on Britjazz in exchange for the occasional piece of artwork. Not only has Britjazz ended but he is about to move house. I will miss our monthly meetings and the opportunity to talk about jazz. Thank you Rodney and the other contributors for expanding my knowledge of British jazz. Merry Christmas to all and best wishes for a healthy and peaceful 2016.
ReplyDeleteThank you, jnd - your sentiments about our meetings are fully reciprocated. I think I learned more from you about jazz than the other way around.
DeleteAt long last we have a moving date - going from London to live in Stratford-upon-Avon - January 15. Therefore now involved in not really so frantic preparations; not so much to do but lots to think about, I find. A bit distracted is all. Looking forward to getting settled with a better set-up and faster connection.
Big' ole tears. Sad day. Many many thanks to Rodney and all other contributors to Britjazz over the years. Although there are other blogs this is the only one, as far as I know, dedicated to British Jazz. It will leave a hole. Although 'dead' the Blog should remain online as a valuable source of reference for British jazz sessions. Maybe even, with no download links, it could again go public.
ReplyDeleteThe 1fichier links will remain active until 23 March, zoot, and even after that members will be able to request re-ups. I don't suppose there will be a lot of demand but we wouldn't want to return to public while there might be activity of course. So we'll see how it goes and decide later. Interesting thought - thanks.
DeleteThanks 'The BritJazz Team'! Cheers!
ReplyDeleteNot only sad for me as a jazz fan but I think it is sad for all the musos who can easily be forgotten as years pass. The 'net worries about losing sales of recordings. It should be just as worried that the artistry is forgotten. Blogs such as this have made a mighty contribution for fans and musos alike. Well done and thankyou
ReplyDeleteYes Keith, the only epitaph many British Jazz musicians have is in the column to my left.
DeleteI'd just like to add my thanks to Rodney and the rest of the team for all their work in making BritJazz such a great place to visit. It will be much missed. Best wishes for your move, Rodney.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really here, supposed to be too busy, but in fact I do occasionally have a few spare minutes. So just a blanket thank you for all the kind comments, appreciation, thanks and good wishes.
ReplyDeleteFor years I've been keeping in mind that here on this french side of the Channel we know nothing about english jazz.
ReplyDeleteTry to find an article about the subject in such historically prestigious magazines like Jazz-Hot or Jazz Magazine...Peanuts !!
Britjazz filled this huge gap better than expected. That's why I agree with others here : it would be great to keep this blog available as long as possible, as a kind of English Jazz source of references. And especially so, the amazing dedication of the particpants would not be lost. They fully deserve it !!!
My infinite thanks to you Rodney, and all other magnificent contributors. Happy New Year everyone !
Many thanks for keeping the flag of British jazz flying. You will be missed.
ReplyDeleteThanks Rodney and others for all of the great British music that you have presented here over the years. The blog will definitely be missed.
ReplyDeleteMany, many thanks tp Rodney and everyone who contributed to the blog. BritJazz will be missed...
ReplyDeleteThank you for everything. I've really enjoyed the music and knowledge that was shared. Take care.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the hard work a blog such as this entails.
ReplyDeleteIt's been great. Many thanks to all concerned. Fine music shared around. So...............lang may your lum reek!
ReplyDeletePersonal wishes to Rodney, hope you are "moved" in more senses than one, Stratford will be a better place for sure. It's been a blast knowing you, all the effort you put in to BJ and prior to that the Ronnie Ross blog, I've been along for the ride, yes, enjoyed the music and the occasional "assistance" it's been a pleasure, specially the one and only meeting in Tooting with John, kinda closed a chapter that did, the chapter with Bill Hugkulstone and all his wonderful live jazz.
ReplyDeleteRegards to all ... Gonzo (Mike)
I'm at least partially settled in my new location but with a list of things to do so long as to be utterly beyond ever finishing I'm afraid. I'm thinking of buying an electric lawn mower as by my standard at least we have two fairly large lawns, one front, one back. I've never had an electric device before. Forty years ago it was a roller and push thing and during our time in London, no lawn to mow. How much time will be left for jazz stuff I don't know yet, with spring and summer rapidly approaching. But I still hope to join in somehow on the blogs while leaving the lead to to others.
ReplyDeleteThe house we are now in was in quite good condition as far as decoration goes so we decided we could get away with not calling in the painters. However, the previous owner was very keen on pictures on the walls etc and so, rather than pull out a row of ten hooks on one wall of my jazz room, I'm going to get a few picture frames from somewhere and print out some of my best pictures of Ronnie Ross to hang on them. I have other plans for later but whether any will every reach fruition seems dubious. One can sit and ponder though. Lately it's been a mundane bucket of water and a rag mostly.
Thanks to all again for the good wishes and generous comments - bho wani, Boppin bob, X75a, piment, yost, Andrew, aroonie, and Gonzo - old friends all. At least Bill will now live on in the collections of quite a few more fans who would not otherwise have happened upon that music, Gonzo - that is a good thought.
I am very happy with the news, Rodney!
DeleteI have had many hours, perhaps days, of enjoyment from most of the music on this blog, and have, in the past, made a minuscule contribution of some Ronnie, recorded from the radio. Foolishly I left it too late to download the final compilation. Would you mind awfully - doing the honours? Much obliged.
ReplyDeleteSure thing, Andrew. Thank you for the kind words.

Many thanks, Rodney.
