0548 Harry Beckett [Joy Unlimited] FLAC 6(40.39)
Contributed by jazzjet, who writes:-
The title of this 1974 Harry Beckett LP became the name of his band for several years. It features the unusual front line of trumpet/flugelhorn and guitar. The guitarist in this original lineup is Ray Russell who made some fine LPs for CBS in the 1960s (‘Turn Circle’ and ‘Dragon Hill’) and later had a separate career as a composer of TV themes (Bergerac, A Touch of Frost etc). On keyboards is Brian Miller (Isotope, Turning Point etc). Shining through, however, is the lovely lyrical tone of Harry Beckett. Rarely has an LP been more appropriately titled.
Harry Beckett - trumpet, flugelhorn
Brian Miller - piano, electric piano, synthesizer
Ray Russell - guitar
Darryl Runswick - bass, bass guitar
Nigel Morris - drums
Martin David - congas

0545 Frank Evans [Mark Twain] FLAC 11(35.33)
Contributed by le porc rouge
Jazz guitarist, Frank Evans, died on February 6th 2007 at the age of 76. A former member of Tubby Hayes Quartet, Frank performed and recorded most often as a solo guitarist. Since the mid-60s, Frank generally shunned the London scene, preferring to operate from his home in Bristol. He took up the guitar at the age of eleven and learned his craft, without formal tuition, through a lengthy apprenticeship in jazz clubs, ballrooms and restaurants around the world.
Frank Evans' debut album was recorded at a concert in 1968 ("Jazz Tete-A-Tete" - 1966 according to other sources) with Tubby Hayes and Tony Coe. After further albums on the 'Saydisc' label, Frank set up his own label 'Blue Bag' to release his solo album 'Noctuary' (BB101) Although today countless musicians have set up their own label and are able to distribute their music digitally, this was an unusual move at the time. “I was fed up with being mucked about by record companies and that whole hassle of the music business. Someone in London said I'd be lucky to sell 500 altogether. But I sold 500 in the first two weeks." Frank said at the time. The album went on to top the UK jazz charts.
He made hundreds of appearances on BBC and ITV television, including the 'Michael Parkinson Show' several times and his own ITV programme 'Frank Evans and Friends' featuring guests, Georgie Fame and Marion Williams. He wrote scores for film and television, particularly for BBC's 'World About Us' series. His earliest influence was Django Reinhardt, but other favourites were Jim Hall, Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery and Laurindo Almeida, with whom he recorded an album on the 'Blue Bag' label.
In recent years, with his health declining, Frank's performances became rarer and much anticipated, particularly in his beloved West Country. " (source:http://www.paulvernonchester.com/FrankEvans.htm)

0544 Frank Evans [In An English Manner] FLAC 13(37.12)
Contributed by le porc rouge
You may have seen this at lpr's place. He was kind enough to suggest it should be posted here so here it is. Thanks to lpr. Another from Frank tomorrow.
"Frank Evans is well known to his many jazz fans but is also a very versatile musician who has written music for a number of television films. "A Pastoral Scene" was used by the BBC in their documentary "Once there was a Fisherman".
On his previous records, Frank Evans has featured as a jazz musician using an electric guitar. Here he plays a steel string acoustic guitar, a "cello guitar", an electric guitar, a normal Spanish guitar and a 12 string Spanish guitar (the combination of the 12 string and 6 string guitars gives a delightful Harpsichord effect as demonstrated in the Bach double violin concerto and the two part invention).
Ian Hobbs has played with Frank for some years and contributes varying sounds from finger cymbals to a full drum kit.
Graham Sothcott plays string bass and second guitar on two tracks. Although a newcomer to the trio he is proving to be a very versatile musician."

For my money, Trevor Watts was perhaps the finest of the many fine musicians on the British "avant garde" scene of the 1960s.
For years, I had a cassette-tape copy of the original 1970s LP issue. This Lithuanian reissue, on LP only, came in at an eye-watering price but it is nicely produced.
Apologies for there being no back cover scan due to an obscure technical hitch but it's pretty much the same as the front cover.

British jazz has come a long way since the days of the Six Swingers and other studio groups of 30s, dance band musicians churning out pallid imitations of the real thing.
The 40s saw the development of the jam session, which offered little in the way of ensemble playing, and for a while, in the late 50s and early 60s, it looked as if the whole thing was going to come to a grinding halt again with the onset of the
‘Trad’ boom.
Fortunately, this fad soon passed, leaving in its wake a generation of jazzmen who had profited from their mistakes and gained an increasing willingness to tear down jazz’s artificially created barriers. Trad, Dixieland, Mainstream, Bop, Modern — few of these categories exist any more as increasing numbers of bands are discovering a public with
a catholic taste for ‘just jazz'.
Many of the Trad Bands vanished on the winds of change that swept the jazz world in the 60s, and of those remaining Chris Barber has embraced Rock and Pop, while the bands of Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball and Alex Welsh are playing better than ever in a swinging Mainstream/Condon style. The John Barnes-Roy Williams Jazz Band is actually an offshoot of the Alex Welsh band, and their debut album is notable for this new stylistic freedom which, far from destroying the band’s jazz spirit, actually enhances it.
Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone is, it’s true, vaguely trad-styled, but no greater proof of the jazzman’s new-found freedom could be offered than the smooth and sophisticated bossa nova arrangement of the old Louis Armstrong favourite Struttin’ With Some Barbecue. Maybe not the gospel according to the Hot Fives and Sevens, but certainly a fascinating example of modern music based on a tune from another era.
Originals like John Barnes' Serenade To A Jobsworth, Roy Williams’ Like We Do and Tony Osborne’s Southern Comfort fit like a glove in the free-wheeling context of such great standards as Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams, But Not For Me, Fascinating Rhythm etc, and it’s the greatest possible tribute to the wit and imagination of the joint leaders and their cohorts that not one of these tunes receives the conventional treatment you would expect.
It is this sort of fresh thinking which is constantly ensuring that British jazz
is no longer the poor relation, and keeps it alive as a vital and far from moribund art form.
Arthur Jackson
AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow
British mainstream musicians John Barnes (on clarinet, alto, baritone, and flute) and trombonist Roy Williams co-lead this fine swing LP from 1975. The septet, which also features trumpeter Digby Fairweather, swings such numbers as "But Not for Me," "A Kiss to Build a Dream On," "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams," and "Struttin' With Some Barbecue" (which is taken as a bossa nova) with creative invention within the tradition of mainstream jazz. The style of music may have been out of vogue in the mid-'70s, but these musicians do not let that fact slow down their ideas.
