0401 Kathy Stobart [The Kathleen Stobart Orchestra] WAV 2(5.03)

Contributed by bluebird, who writes:-

Florence Kathleen (Kathy) Stobart
1 April 1925 - 5 July 2014

Kathy Stobart, a fine saxophonist, and an earlier pioneer in gaining the acceptance of women in Jazz, died on 5 July 2014 aged 89.
Kathy retired in 2004 after a long and varied career but maintained a keen interest in music and teaching up to the time of her death.
BritJazz wishes to add to the many tributes paid elsewhere by acknowledging her work and contribution to the world of British Jazz and music in general.
This music selection comes from an obscure and rare 78 rpm record featuring her Orchestra and one of two discs she recorded in 1951 for the small Manchester based label, Decibel.  It was her first date as leader and, surprisingly, she only recorded twice more as leader in her entire career.
But look at who was in this band and who were later to become much more well known.  Bert Courtley was her husband at the time.

  2. this is very sad news. Kathy was a rare person in that she played saxophone and showed many male musos how it could sound swinging, individual and melodic. her work with Humph was always reliable and valuable. Thanks for the post.
