Beryl was born in the UK in 1923 and sang professionally when she just 14.
ReplyDeleteShe worked with the Quintet Of The Hot Club Of France in 1939 (twice) and later sang with Oscar Rabin, Geraldo and the Squadronnaires before emigrating to the USA in 1947. The picture at the top of the post was taken in 1947 in New York and shows her being interviewed by Tommy Dorsey. Mary Lou Williams, amongst others, looks on.
She had a very successful career in the USA based in California and is still singing at the age of 88.
You can see and hear some of her more recent performances on YouTube.
Have been listening to this beautiful music, previously unknown to me. This caused me to investigate what else might be available (there are a few CDs on Amazon). I also looked up Wikipedia, which tells me that "On October 28, 2011, Davis died in Los Angeles from complications of Alzheimer's disease, at age 87". Very sadly, then, she is not still singing at the age of 88. I really wish she was.
Deletebventure - thanks for letting us know - sad indeed.
