0049 Dill Jones [Jazz Today-Piano Moods] FLAC 11(36.19)
Contributed by bluebird, who writes:-
Dill Jones didn't record all that much under his own name and here are three sessions taken from three eps - 'Top Of The Poll', 'Dill Jones Plus Four' and 'Piano Moods Volume Five' recorded between 1956 and 1959.
Two are Trio sessions and the other is a Quintet session with the added horns of Ray Premru and Duncan Lamont.
Dill's recording career began in 1946 playing with Carlo Krahmer and then Vic Lewis. In the early 1950s he signed up with the modernists and is featured on many recordings from that period with such musicians as Ronnie Scott, Jimmy Deuchar, Tommy Whittle and Kenny Graham. He has already appeared on this blog in various sideman roles.
Once more, another pianist who emigrated to the USA back in 1961 but he did return to the UK from time to time to play and record.
He died in 1984 in New York just 60 years old.

Dill Jones....We may have woken up this morning to a hung parliament but there's nothing 'hung' about this blog...way out in the lead! As you say Dill didn't record much under his own name so this one's really intriguing. Many thanks bluebird & BritJazz, much appreciated.

Thanks for sharing this bluebird. Been loving it the last few days. Been waiting to hear Dill since having a pint or two in The Seahorse (formerly The Commercial) in New Quay, Wales, and discovering that he used to play there in the '40s, sometimes with his pal Dylan Thomas at the next table.
ReplyDeleteAnother great post. Solid and swinging. Many thanks for making these overlooked chestnuts available.
ReplyDeleteAn Appeal.
ReplyDeleteMy father died last year aged 93, but still of sound mind. He was a lover of piano jazz, and continued to play for fellow retirees until his passing. He was influenced by pianists from pre-and post WWII years, so I grew up listening to Errol Garner, Fats Waller, and the British pianists who found success in the USA, such as George Shearing, Victor Feldman and Dill Jones.
We had an ep: Dill Jones Trio (Nixa NJE1024), recorded on September 7th, 1956, and since re-released as part of this CD, which I now have and thank you very much for it. However, although Moonglow, 'Deed I Do and Viper's Drag are included, one track has been omitted: Blues For An Ancient Virginal.
And this is the one track which has reverberated through the echo chamber of my memory since I last visited the family nest some 25 years ago. (I now live in Jakarta.)
It is totally unique, possibly played on "an ancient virginal" and my appeal is simple: David Taylor in the UK (http://vzone.virgin.net/davidh.taylor/jones.htm) tells me that he has "asked a few vinyl collectors about [the] missing track but none of them has a copy. As far as I can see it has not been released on any other CD and I can't think why it was left off the Vocalion as they normally include everything on a re-issue."
Can anyone help?
Please?
Terry C.
Terry. Our regular contributors do not have the track unfortunately and say they are always on the lookout for it. No doubt it will be posted here in due course if it does surface. If you have any luck, please let us know.
