Originally recorded in 1965 for Doug Dobell's 77 label this is the cd re-issue.
Peter Comton ran the band as a rehearsal band of semi-pros and studio musicians but included in the ranks on this recording are Art Themen and Ray Warleigh. This was the band's only commercial recording and a fine one it is too.

0392 Joe Harriott [Southern Horizons] FLAC 9(41.25)

Joe's Quintet recorded these 3 separate dates over the  period of a year for the Columbia label in the UK. The 4 titles from the 1959 session were issued originally on an ep called 'Blue Harriott' and the titles Caravan and Liggin' on an ep called 'A Guy Called Joe'. Both these eps have been posted previously on BritJazz.
The remaining 3 titles from 21 April 1960 were never issued in the UK but the US label Jazzland put the 2 eps and the 3 unissued tracks together to form this lp, 'Southern Horizons'.
This was probably an attempt to 'sell' Joe in the USA where he was not very well known but he is not well recorded here on some of the tracks and his sound is distant and with some echo. Whether the problem was in the original Columbia recordings or in the transfers made by Jazzland is not known.
Coleridge Goode plays in that infuriating style of singing/humming along with his bass solos which does absolutely nothing for me (and you too Slam Stewart and any others out there).  You really have to decide whether you want to be a bassman or a vocalist but not both please.
But enjoy Joe and the others in spite of the indifferent sound in places.
