There were two pianists with very similar names working in the UK during the same period..
There is Colin 'Barney' Bates and there was this musician called Collin 'Tucker' Bates who was actually Australian. Both worked almost exclusively in the Mainstream/Traditional fields but this, being in the modern style, is quite a departure in what is Collin Bates' only recording as leader. I don't think there has been a cd re-issue unless it was in Japan.
Collin Bates died in Australia in 1991 aged 60.
His rhythm section partners are not particularly well known but they have obviously worked together as a group and they present a varied and interesting programme of standards and original music. The recording date is indicated only as c.1968.
The music was ripped from the Japanese re-issue lp whilst the cover scans are from the original UK lp issue. I have both lps and thought that the Japanese sound would be better and require less, if any, restoration work.

Many thanks, Rodney and jazzuk!
ReplyDeleteThanks Rodney and bluebird! Cheers!
ReplyDeleteA notably good set and its very unfortunate that there was never any more from this group. I first heard 'Brew' on the recreation of the proposed volume 3 of IMPRESSED on the excellent 'Orgy in Rhythm' blog, and was excited enough to make a substantial effort to get a Japanese vinyl lp (which I then had to get transferred to cd - definately no vinyl revival 'round 'ere, boss). I'd have offered it to Britjazz long ago but it seemed out of the timeframe. My mistake, obviously. Its a life full of regrets.
ReplyDeleteThe "emphasis on modern jazz" in the blurb at the top of the blog, Greg? This was included to reassure those among our founding members who were worried about a slide into "trad" but we hoped the words before it would seem sufficiently inclusive. Indeed, we have posted a goodly number that might be so described. Perhaps you have other material that might suitable? Any timeframe.
DeleteI live in Australia and am delighted to find this album! Thanks a lot, Rodney.
ReplyDeleteThanks, bluebird. Those old Fontana LPs are very nostalgic.
