0283 Cleo Laine [Cleo's Choice] FLAC 20(1.02.57)

Contributed by bellawoods, who writes:-
All Cleo's recordings for Nixa between 1956 and 1958, and which originally appeared on a 10" lp, eps and 78s, are collected here for the first time on this OOP cd.
The musicians are drawn from the ranks of the Dankworth bands of the period in various permutations and there are some tasty solos in places. This is Cleo breaking free from the Dankworth band where she appeared as the band singer and just starting out on her solo career.
There are informative 'sleeve notes' on the cd cover which opens out to produce a double sided large format display. The images have not been cropped - this is how they appear on the original insert. Can you spot the 1951 Melody Maker headline where Lennie Bush gets busted for drug possession? I bet it's one he would rather not have seen dragged up after all this time.

  2. Many thanks for another fine post, bellawoods & BritJazz. Your outstanding efforts are much appreciated as always. Unfortunately, track 1 ("I'm Beginning To See The Light") & track 15 ("He Needs Me") both cut out a few seconds before the end. Any chance of re-posting these 2 standout tracks with the full endings restored? Or is this how they appear on the CD? Either way, thanks again for your time & trouble.

    1. BR - Both tracks appear to be okay here, from both download sources. Track 1 has a rather abrupt ending - a long sustained chord ended by an accented note. The length of the track is 2:58.533 in total, including the silence at the ends. Track 15 has a quite normal ending, a short chord including muted trumpets which ends with an echo. The length of that track is 3:44.373 in total.

If the tracks you have are the same length, we suggest you listen again. Perhaps you expected fade outs?

If your tracks are shorter then it wouldappear to be a problem with the download. In that case, please try downloading again, perhaps from the source you did not use last time.

Kindly let us know how you get on. We can re-upload if necessary but both RS and DB have been fully tested today.

    2. You were 100% right, BritJazz. The problem appears to have been with the download &/or file extraction process. For some reason, it/they cut approximately 10 seconds off both tracks based on the track timings you provided. (This has never happened before so I can't give you a reason for it other than gremlins in the system somewhere.) I followed your suggestion & both tracks are playing normally now. Thanks again for your help & please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused. I wouldn't have troubled you except for the fact that Cleo Laine's version of "I'm Beginning To See The Light" is a gem that deserves to be heard in all its full-length glory.

    3. You're welcome. BR - no apology necessary. These things happen we know. Agree entirely about partial tracks - not at all acceptable. Glad to hear you have it sorted.
