0186 Johnny Dankworth and Ronnie Scott [Bop at Club 11] FLAC 13(55.41)

Contributed by Blue Prince, who writes:-
A concert featuring these two groups on 9 April 1949 at St. George Hall, London and recorded live by Carlo Krahmer for his Esquire label.
Krahmer's disc recording equipment was primitive and the results reflect this but it was an historic occasion for British jazz - one of the earliest live Bop recordings.

  1. Bop at Club 11. Thank you both Blue Prince and Jazzuk. How good to have this music fully available again and what a joy. Gosh, the energy and enthusiasm those young guys had. And you can hear how good Tommy Pollard was - even on that piano!

Oh and it's about time that we all said a belated thank you to Carlo Krahmer and Peter Newbrook, not least for carrying those Stone-Age heavyweight disc recorders around. The next time I slip the latest recorder, the size and weight of a small pack of chewing gum, into my pocket I will think of Carlo and Peter.

  2. Many thanks for this rarity. Much appreciated. I don't know why but I had a lot of trouble downloading. Tried 3 times with Megaupload and they all failed with a few bytes to go, Finally got it with Hotfile. Must have been a bad day but the music is worth it. Was it really over 60 years ago? I suppose it was. The birth of British bop.

  6. It's great to see my uncle Tommy (Tommy Pollard)mentioned on these pages. Thank you. Sadly his wife Alma passed away a couple of years ago now, but her stories of their time in the 50's, I will never forget !
