Contributed by delmonico, who writes:-
This is part of a Modern Jazz Concert recorded on 30 October 1954 at the Royal Festival Hall, London with three different groups being featured. This was the afternoon session of the concert, the evening being devoted to traditional jazz.
Don Rendell's Sextet (track 3 previous appeared on a Tempo ep and was not on the original Decca lp) is first up followed by the Ken Moule Seven and finally the newly formed Tony Crombie Orchestra for their first recording session.
The Swedish baritone sax player, Lars Gullin, made a guest appearance at this concert but due to MU rules was not allowed to be recorded.

Sounds great - can't wait to listen!
ReplyDeleteShame we won't hear from Lars Gullin: my all-time favourite baritone saxophonist
Great post!
ReplyDeleteAmazing how Rendell's playing changed during the decade.
I wonder if somewhere, someone has recordings of the numbers with Gullin?
Thank you!
ReplyDeleteWonderful stuff. I love the energy that comes through in these live recordings. Robinson’s composition and arrangements for Rendell’s band are very impressive, as is his piano playing, and it’s nice to get the ‘lost’ trio track. Great to hear some more early Dizzy Reece, too.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year (belatedly). I’m very much looking forward to what 1960 might bring!
thank you delmonico
