0435 Laurie Johnson [Lock Up Your Daughters] FLAC 4(9.11)

Contributed by bellawoods, who writes:-
This is a bit of a musical oddity.
Laurie Johnson wrote the music and Lionel Bart the words for a 1959 musical, 'Lock Up Your Daughters', based on Henry Fielding's book 'Rape Upon Rape.
It ran successfully in the West End for three or four years and eventually a cast recording was made.
Johnson then decided to cover four of the songs in the show with a big band recording including jazz soloists and this is the result. The ep is elusive and expensive (there's one on ebay for £80) but the four 'jazz' tracks were found buried away in a 'Best Of Laurie Johnson' compilation cd issued in 2009.
The tracks are quite short and each is a feature for one of the jazz soloists - Johnny Scott, Bert Courtley, Shake Keane and Joe Harriott.  The other musicians in the band are not identified and the recording date is not known, but presumably in the early 1960s.
To paraphrase the lawyers, 'the discographies are silent'.

0431 Derek Smith Tony Kinsey [National Jazz Federation Modern Jazz Concert Volume 1] FLAC 6(40.55)

Contributed by Rodney, who writes:-
This album was previously available on the Ronnie Ross Music blog but the version offered here is a new rip. No replay gain and remastered by bluebird. The original recording was not of good quality and the condition of the vinyl did not help but we've done the best we can on what was I think an historical jazz occasion.
The cover too has been rescanned and improved by jazzandylan.

0427 Jimmy Witherspoon ['Spoon Sings And Swings] FLAC 11(42.31)

Contributed by grumpy, who writes:-
Great atmospheric live gig. Dick Morrissey is on fire. Phil Seamen too.

David Illingworth ~ Jazz Journal Vol20 No2, February 1967
Undoubtedly the best Witherspoon album for many a year, though perhaps my pleasure was enhanced by the memory of several performances by Morrissey and Spoon. It is in fact a Quintet on this record; a complete whole, singer and backing. South and Bates create a solid background, and Seamen blasts the session along like an after-burner. The boy from Sutton County Grammar School gives Spoon the best tenor backing he has had since Ben Webster was behind him. On occasions he comes on like the old Fats Domino man Herb Hardesty—a direct rhythm-and-blues attack, but not vulgar. Those who have heard this combination over the past year or so will need no encouragement to buy this LP—the recording has been well done, despite the limitations the warm little room at Barnes may have suggested in this respect. Spoon is in fine form, and this is perhaps, his best recording ever—uncluttered by an all-star backing. The less interesting spots are the fast / Gotta Girl and Kansas City and Percy Mayfield's over-sentimental Someone To Love. But the word is less not least. Buy it.

0426 Peter King [Brother Bernard] FLAC 10(1.08.43)

Contributed by azule serape, who writes:-
I don't think Peter King is sufficiently appreciated in the UK although he has had a long and distinguished career in music for over 60 years. He didn't record as a leader until 1982.
These recordings from 1988 and 1992 show him at his peak and with a superb rhythm section. Alan Skidmore and Guy Barker guest on some tracks.
Miles Music firstly issued the lp in 1988 and then for some unexplained reason issued the cd in 1992 omitting two of the lp tracks but adding four new tracks from later sessions.
This posting contains all the issued tracks from both the lp and the cd which actually would have fitted on one cd.
